August 15, 2016 – Amarillo ISD and 53 of its schools met the state’s standard on academic performance according to 2016 accountability ratings released by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) today. The ratings report reveals AISD met the target in 215 out of 219 total categories evaluated by TEA.

The district’s graduation rate remains high at 89.3 percent. In the STAAR exams, comparisons show AISD students outperform their peers around the state in a majority of tests in third through eighth grades. Math and science remain strong areas for the district.

“We are proud to see these reports of academic progress across our district,” said Dr. Dana West, AISD Superintendent. “While we know tests are not the sole measure of performance for a student, a school or a district, they are an important part of what we do. The scores show we’re a step closer to our ultimate goal-- which is to prepare every student for success.”

In high school end-of-course (EOC) testing, English II scores posted a five percent increase over last year, and US History saw a four percent improvement in comparison to last year’s district scores. State comparisons are not yet available in EOC testing.

North Heights Alternative Academy and Allen 6th Grade Campus received ratings of ‘improvement required.’ Allen met the standards set by the state in student achievement and closing performance gaps, but missed the standard in progress and postsecondary readiness.  North Heights missed the category of student achievement by one point. In the upcoming weeks, TEA is expected to release additional accountability data to school districts. AISD will review the data to determine whether to appeal any ratings.

Overall, the results indicate that the district is academically on track, even as the accountability standards increase in difficulty.

“AISD scholars are generally performing better than the state,” explained Dr. West. “That is something our parents and community can be proud of. AISD teachers are doing extraordinary work with our students… and these results confirm it.”
