Accountability Ratings Released

AISD Continues Positive Trend in Graduation Rates
Students Learning

August 7, 2015 – Amarillo ISD and 52 of its schools met the state’s standard on academic performance according to 2015 accountability ratings released by the Texas Education Agency today.

AISD’s graduation rate remains high at 90 percent, the same as last year and up 12 percentage points from five years ago. Correspondingly, the dropout rate continues to decrease, down to 3.9 percent from 9.4 percent five years ago.

On 3rd through 8th grade STAAR exams in reading and writing, social studies, and science, AISD students generally scored at or near state averages. Math scores for grades 3 – 8 are not reported yet because the state has not decided what scores will earn a passing grade. Traditionally, AISD has done better than state averages on the math STAAR test.

District students outperformed their peers across the state on three out of five end-of-course tests. Biology was at the top, with 93 percent of AISD high school students who took the test earning a passing score. Across the state, high school students now have to pass five end-of-course tests including English Language Arts I and II, Algebra I, Biology, and US History in order to graduate.

One school, Rogers Elementary, was rated ‘improvement required’, missing one of four benchmarks by only 2 points. Rogers met the standards set by the state in student achievement, academic improvement, and in closing performance gaps, but just missed the standard in ‘postsecondary readiness.’ For an elementary school, postsecondary readiness is indicated by the number of students who scored at the top levels of the STAAR test.

Accountability results show the district is academically on track, even with the continuing challenges of a diverse population that includes high numbers of economically disadvantaged and limited English-proficient students. “It’s paramount to us that we equip all of our students to be prepared for success beyond high school,” said AISD Superintendent-elect Dr. Dana West. “Our students and teachers are to be commended for their efforts. Amarillo is a wonderful city and AISD will continue to work diligently to make our community proud.”
