TOY Finalists 2016

May 6, 2016 –Announced this morning at the Lamar Lively Teacher of the Year Breakfast, elementary winner Carol Winn and secondary winner Mary Malone will go on to represent Amarillo ISD at the Region 16 Teacher of the Year award, held later this summer. The annual breakfast is sponsored by Education Credit Union.

These district Teachers of the Year are symbolic of the quality educators in the Amarillo community. With nearly 2,300 teachers employed by AISD, representing them all is of great honor. Winn and Malone have been awarded $500 from the Lamar Lively Fund at the Amarillo Area Foundation and $300 from the Amarillo Education Foundation. In addition, Southwest Airlines provided each winner with two round-trip tickets to anywhere the airline flies, and Amarillo Auto Clean provided each winner with one year of free car washes.

“Our district Teachers of the Year are shining examples of the caliber of teaching professionals in AISD who are dedicated to delivering quality instruction in a caring environment every day,” said Program Director for Community Partnerships Denise Blanchard.

Elementary Teacher of the Year Carol Winn educated students in music therapy and English at each level of schooling before finding her home in the library at Humphrey’s Highland Elementary School. Stacks of books and rows of computers have replaced her chalkboard. Winn works with her students on research practices both in book format and in the ever-evolving technology native to these young minds. Her reach extends beyond the shelves of books into the entire campus, where she acts as Gifted and Talented coordinator as well as Project Based Learning and Response to Intervention instructor.

Colleagues and community members value the enthusiasm Winn has for her students’ education. Teacher Jo Beth Wilson shared of her intentional programming, “She has instilled a love of reading in our students in a variety of ways…There isn’t another teacher in our school who has contact with every child and impacts them deeply with her knowledge.”

Secondary Teacher of the Year Mary Malone has “flipped” her ninth-grade algebra classroom at Caprock High School. This teaching style enables students to slow down a lesson, or speed it up in some cases, to suit their learning needs. Once at school, a mini-lesson is taught before students work the bulk of their math problems in the classroom. Malone’s classroom is also host to a workshop lab. Fellow educators can sit in and learn how she uses technology to encourage higher-level thinking and acquaint students with machines and programs they may one day work with.

Caprock Principal David Bishop applauds Malone for the high expectations she places on herself and her peers to educate students for success throughout their lives. “She has a unique gift for touching the hearts and minds of her students. She inspires them to flourish and reach their full potential.”
