District Wants Families to Fill Out FAFSA

District Wants Families to Fill Out FAFSA for College Aid
FAFSA

January 11, 2016 – With more Amarillo ISD graduates applying and being accepted into colleges now than ever before, it has become an increasing priority of counselors and college and career clerks to help students track down financial aid. The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is the prime focus for educators of all levels as they work to ensure students are given the best opportunity possible to attend the school of their choice.

“By completing the FAFSA, families and students are eligible for scholarships at higher institutes and any financial aid,” Tracey Morman, guidance and counseling director, said. “Subsidized loans, scholarships, grants and work-study programs are also made available through FAFSA.”

Most scholarship committees strongly encourage students to fill out the FAFSA prior to being considered for financial assistance. Colleges and continuing education programs also require students to have a current FAFSA on file in order to apply for on-campus employment. FAFSA manages the federal programs which provide grants, loans and work-study funds to students attending college or career school.

The FAFSA application can be found online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students and families applying must have their tax and income information available when filling out the application so aid is appropriately calculated. Both the student and parent will apply for a personal identification number through www.pin.ed.gov so they may sign documents electronically.

Applications open January 1 and close June 30 for federal aid beginning the following fall semester. The FAFSA must be completed before the start of every school year for the calculation of assistance needs. Students are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible as aid is dispersed first come, first serve.

Be on the lookout for opportunities to learn more about FAFSA and even receive help filling forms out. Amarillo ISD high schools are offering financial aid assistance opportunities for students and their families throughout the spring.
