Dr. Dana West Confirmed as Next Superintendent

AISD Trustees Confirm Dr. Dana West as Next Superintendent
Dr. WestMay 14, 2015 – In a special meeting Thursday, the Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees voted in confirmation of Dr. Dana West becoming the next superintendent of the district. Dr. West’s superintendent contract was also approved for the period of September 1, 2015 to August 31, 2016.

“We saw in Dr. West a vision for education that fits the needs of our district’s unique and diverse students,” Board President John Ben Blanchard said. “Her contagious enthusiasm for learning, her passion for teaching and her desire to provide every student with a pathway for success will serve this community well for years to come.”

Dr. West has served as the Executive Director of Student Performance for the Caprock Cluster since 2013. After beginning her career in education 25 years ago as a fifth-grade teacher in Plainview, Texas, Dr. West joined AISD in 2008 as the principal at Travis Middle School before becoming the principal at Caprock High School in 2012. For much of the last 15 years, Dr. West has also served as an adjunct professor at Wayland Baptist University teaching education courses at the college level.

“I am honored to have the confidence of the Board of Trustees to become the next superintendent,” Dr. West said. “I look forward to the journey ahead as we work together to continue our tradition of excellence in AISD.”

Dr. West has deep roots in the philosophies of providing a culture of universal achievement for all students.

“The deeper I became immersed in education over the years, the more it became abundantly clear to me that it is our responsibility as adults to ensure every child is prepared with the knowledge and skills they need to be able to pursue their dreams,” Dr. West said. “For some students, that may be an apprenticeship. For others, that may be a doctorate degree. It doesn’t matter what they choose for themselves, as long as we as educators make sure all those opportunities are available to them.”

Dr. West has lent her support to efforts encouraging educational attainment, such as No Excuses University, a program which emphasizes college readiness for all students regardless of ethnicity or economic background. Her commitment to this philosophy goes beyond the classroom to the No Limits No Excuses community outreach program which aims to help adults pursue the education they need to earn a living wage.

Dr. West will be the first woman to hold the position of superintendent in AISD’s 126 year history. She will succeed Superintendent Rod Schroder who announced his retirement after 43 years with AISD, 15 of those years as the leader of the district. In early March, the board began the process of looking for a new superintendent by conducting conversations with teacher representatives and key district leaders, and by seeking input from the community with an online survey. Internal applicants were interviewed before the board decided to name a lone finalist for superintendent. State law requires a 21-day waiting period before the board can make an appointment official.
