Early Voting April 27-May 5

Early Voting April 27-May 5, Three School Board Positions Vacant
AISD Board

April 20, 2015 – Amarillo residents have the opportunity to vote in three different elections this spring, the Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees, Amarillo College Board of Regents, and Amarillo City Commission and Mayor. Election Day is Saturday, May 9, but residents may choose to vote early from April 27 through May 5 at specified locations.

Three positions on the seven-member Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees are vacant. Four candidates are running for these three positions, incumbent Jim Austin, John Betancourt, Vianey Valdez Earthman and Scott Flow.

Trustees Anette Carlisle and Jack Thompson have announced they are not seeking reelection.

Each of the three positions is a four-year term and is at-large, representing the entire school district rather than one particular geographical area. Cumulative voting will be used in the school board election, which means each voter has up to three votes to cast. Voters may cast their three votes in any combination for the candidate or candidates of their choice. Cumulative voting has been used to elect AISD school trustees since 2000.

School trustees provide an important public service to the Amarillo community and serve without compensation. The Board is the district’s policy-making body. The overall purpose of the Board is to set the direction for the operation of the school district.
