January 26, 2015 – Amarillo ISD high school students and their families are invited to attend Future Ready Tuesday, January 27 from 5-8 p.m. in the Amarillo Civic Center Grand Plaza and Auditorium. Jonathan Sprinkles, award winning speaker, will host the evening and mediate a panel of college experts as they answer questions on the minds of many who are applying for college and financial aid.

“We have resources throughout our community students and families can use to further their education. With Future Ready, we’re able to bring many of those resources into one place, so everyone has the opportunity to work with them,” Denise Blanchard, program director of community partnerships, said.

A college and career fair leads Future Ready from 5-7 p.m., with representatives from more than 24 organizations providing lively conversation about the programs they offer. Students and their families can then wander into the culinary arts competition from 5:30-6:30 p.m., in which all four high school teams will be serving their most prized desserts for a chance to win the people’s choice Golden Skillet award.

This event exposes high school students to the number and variety of post-secondary opportunities available in our community. This is a chance for our culinary students to shine by demonstrating skills they have developed to their fellow students and the community,” LeAnn Estep, director of career and technical education, explained.

The capstone of Future Ready begins at 6:30 p.m., with a keynote presentation by Sprinkles. The panel of college experts will then be guided by Sprinkles in discussing relevant questions about college applications and financial aid. The panel of college experts is comprised of leaders, admissions representatives and students from Amarillo College, West Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University.

The evening will conclude with two $1,000 scholarships awarded by the Amarillo Education Foundation.

Free Future Ready tickets are available in the College and Career Center at Amarillo High, Caprock, North Heights, Palo Duro and Tascosa high schools. To be eligible for the scholarships awarded at Future Ready, actively enrolled AISD students must fill-out a scholarship ticket in the College and Career Center prior to the event. Students must be in attendance to be awarded these scholarships.

Showing off their skills, students from Caprock’s floral design class are providing flower arrangements for the culinary arts exhibits and the auditorium stage.

AISD and Xcel Energy provide this free event to power the futures of students. Supporting sponsors include Josephine Anderson Charitable Trust, Dr. Kent Roberts and Ilene Roberts Balliett Foundation, Amarillo Education Foundation, Junior League of Amarillo, Mays Foundation, Happy State Bank, and Amarillo Chamber of Commerce.
