November 14, 2016—A powerful new app for parents is now available from Amarillo ISD and Chartwells, the district’s dining services partner. The app gives parents and students the opportunity to explore school menus, see photos of the actual menu items, and investigate nutritional information all from their smart phone or computer.

The app, “School Lunch by Nutrislice,” is free and available for download through any app store. “This is a good service,” said Chartwells Manager of Dining Services for AISD Michael Brungo. “With an app, the accessibility of information is better because we’re able to reach a larger audience, many of whom don’t have computers at home, but do have smart phones.”

School Lunch by Nutrislice gives users menus for each individual campus. Menus are accompanied by photos of the actual food item. The photos are not stock photos, and were taken as executive chefs at Chartwells corporate kitchens hand-prepared each item. Users can drill down further to find nutritional and food allergen information for everything served in a cafeteria, from the main entrée to a ketchup packet. For example, the lunch menu at Bowie Middle School for Monday, November 14 lists a ginger chicken and edamame bowl as one of the entrée options, with a calorie count of 360 calories. Soy is noted as a possible food allergen for that dish.

“We’re always concerned about what we’re putting in our bodies,” Brungo said. “Here’s a chance for parents to see the menu, see the food and then make an informed decision.”

Additionally, users have the option to print menus from the app. This is an important feature as all AISD campuses will stop printing menus at the end of the fall semester. Brungo cited environmentally-friendly efforts and the convenience factor as reasons for the move from printed menus. “We have become a society of convenience. We’re an information society. With this app, instead of having a printed menu, users can push a button and actually see much more information.”
