Partnership Provides Student Athletes Heart Screenings
FootballApril 10, 2015 – Amarillo ISD has partnered with the Cody Stephens “Go Big or Go Home” Memorial Foundation to provide cardiac screening for all student athletes in the high school athletic programs April 27-28. Cardiac screening will be offered on a voluntary basis to all athletes across the four AISD high school campuses.

“We have contracted with the Cypress ECG Project to screen athletes with an ECG (electrocardiogram) to give parents the opportunity to have their child tested for any type of heart issues prior to competing in athletics,” AISD Athletic Director Brad Thiessen explained.

An ECG, also known as an EKG, can detect issues in the heart which may be missed in a standard physical. It involves placing electrodes on the chest around the heart to record signals for a short period. The test is then emailed to a trained cardiologist, and screened for any abnormalities. If the test is flagged, the parents will be notified for further follow up with their personal cardiologist.

“This is something we have looked at for a while and feel it is important enough to give parents this opportunity,” said Thiessen. “With the cost being minimal, we think it is a good way to make sure we catch any problems prior to high school competition.”

After the first year of screening, AISD will provide screening for all incoming 9th-graders who plan on enrolling in athletic competition.

The initial screening is open to all high school grade levels. Parents will be asked to pay $5 for their portion of the test, and the Cody Stephens Foundation will pick up the remainder of the $15 test fee. For further information, parents can contact the athletic trainer at their respective high school campus.
