May 6, 2016--Palo Duro High School English teacher and 2015 National Teacher of the Year Shanna Peeples has been named a 2016 Global Learning Fellow by the NEA Foundation. As part of the year-long fellowship, Peeples and other teacher leaders will build classroom lessons that will be used around the world to teach students how to be global citizens. Part of the fellowship includes a 10-day international field study this summer in Peru.

The fellowship equips educators to bring an international perspective to their students, school districts, and state and local teacher organizations. “We believe that, in order to thrive as global citizens, today’s students need to learn how to investigate the world, recognize perspectives, communicate ideas, and take action,” said Harriet Sanford, President and CEO of the NEA Foundation. “That’s why the NEA Foundation created the Global Learning Fellowship: to provide educators with comprehensive professional learning focused on authentically integrating these global skills into classroom instruction.”

Throughout the fellowship, Peeples  and other Fellows will develop at least four lesson plans integrated with global competency skills that challenge students to investigate the world beyond their immediate environment. These lesson plans will be shared with educators around the world. Collaborating as a global classroom is something Peeples became especially passionate about during her time as National Teacher of the Year. “Now that I’ve had this 30,000 foot view of education, there’s an awareness about the ability to connect with people, how to connect teachers, how to connect classrooms,” she said. “The beauty of technology and things like social media is that they let us truly become global collaborators. That’s a way we can give our kids the experience of being global citizens when they can’t travel.”

Training for Peeples and the 30 other Fellows will include professional development, webinars and introductory Spanish language learning.

Peeples just completed a year of service as National Teacher of the Year, travelling more than 100,000 miles across the U.S. and world as the nation’s education ambassador.
