Seen and Heard at the December Board Meeting
Board Meeting

December 15, 2014 - Amarillo ISD Chief Financial Officer Les Hoyt announced the district has been named Chartwells School Dining Services’ National Account of the Year.  Representatives from Chartwells corporate were on hand at a reception on December 10 to present the award to Brent Hoover, Chartwells resident district manager in AISD.

Superintendent Rod Schroder discussed highlights of several state reports, including the 2013-2014 Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR), an annual report issued by the Texas Education Agency which compiles STAAR test scores, attendance rates, dropout rates, college-ready graduate rates and other information related to academic performance of AISD students.  Overall, 80 percent of AISD students passed the STAAR test, compared to an average of 77 percent statewide.

In other business, the school board renewed casualty insurance coverage with the Texas Association of School Boards Risk Management Fund at a cost of $131,303, which is 4 percent above last year’s cost.  Trustees also awarded a contract for property insurance coverage to Travelers/Lloyds at a cost of $900,784.  The Board also awarded a contract to Imagine Learning for an interactive web-based reading and language acquisition program to use with English-as-a-Second-Language and special education students.

Trustees accepted the recommendation of the AISD Calendar Committee and approved a 2015-2016 school calendar which includes two waiver days (for a total of 178 instructional days instead of 180); 10 days off at Christmas Break; three early release days for students (October 9, November 15, and February 19); and May 27, 2016, as the last day of school.
