Seen and Heard at the January Board Meeting
Board Meeting

January 23, 2015 – Students from schools across the district presented songs, videos, artwork, posters, poems, gifts, cards and treats to the seven AISD trustees in appreciation of their service and in honor of School Board Recognition Month which happens every year in January. Superintendent Schroder presented each board member with a certificate and token of appreciation from the district.

The Board heard from State Board of Education representative Marty Rowley about the SBOE’s goals and vision to develop a long-range plan for public education in Texas. Trustees also heard a report from a group of parents at Bowie Middle School who have started a new parent involvement council.

In action items, trustees approved the purchase of HVAC units to replace more than 600 aging and inefficient units across the district. The HVAC units will cost $2.7 million, and they represent the second of three HVAC replacement projects authorized by voters in the 2013 bond election. Trustees also awarded a contract for installation of these HVAC units to Scottco in the amount of $2.1 million.

The Board awarded a bid for a comprehensive districtwide video surveillance system to Knight Security. This project will replace older equipment at AISD campuses and will bring management of the surveillance system under a single platform. The project will include the purchase of 2,305 cameras and additional technology and will cost approximately $3,750,000, about $1,250,000 less than budgeted. The enhanced video surveillance equipment, which was also included in the 2013 bond election, will improve security at all AISD schools.
