Seen and Heard at the March School Board Meeting
Board

March 23, 2015 – The School Board heard a report from Superintendent Schroder about education-related bills being considered for proposal in the current state legislative session. Worth noting:  legislation by Senator Kel Seliger to create criteria which would allow a student who has not passed all end-of-course tests to still graduate; a bill by Representative Huberty which would establish a grant program to provide funding for half-day pre-kindergarten; a bill by Senator Lucio which would limit counselors’ time spent on non-counseling activities to no more than 10 percent; and another bill by Representative Huberty which would eliminate state tests in writing and social studies in grades 3 – 8 and the U.S. History end-of-course test.

Trustees approved SAMCO Capital Markets, and Mr. Doug Whitt, as the district’s financial advisor, and they awarded a contract to AT&T to provide network access to the new Bowie and Travis 6th grade campuses. The Board authorized the issuance, or sale, of school building bonds, and they approved a contract with the Randall County elections administrator to provide election services for the May 9 school board election.

The Board also awarded a three-year contract to Dearborn National to provide group life and long-term disability insurance for district employees. Finally, the Board authorized the district’s legal counsel, in consultation with the Superintendent or Chief Financial Officer, to file a lawsuit against Travelers Lloyds Insurance Company relating to storm damage to district buildings in May 2013.
