Seen and Heard at the May School Board Meeting

Seen and Heard at the May School Board Meeting
Board

May 18, 2015 – The School Board presented certificates of achievement to nine Amarillo ISD middle school students who received state recognition in the Talent Identification Program sponsored by Duke University. The Board also gave special recognition to Bonham Middle School’s Nicole Clennon who received national recognition in the TIP program. To be recognized, these academically talented middle schoolers achieved high scores on either the SAT or ACT test, which are normally given to high school juniors and seniors.

Trustees also recognized three National Merit Commended students, two National Merit Hispanic Scholars and one National Merit Achievement Scholar from AISD high schools for their academic achievements in the country’s National Merit Scholarship program.

Trustees took time from the meeting to honor Anette Carlisle and Jack Thompson who are leaving the Board after decades of service. Superintendent Schroder presented a resolution from the City of Amarillo thanking Mrs. Carlisle for 19 years and Dr. Thompson for 35 years on the school board, and each received a rocking chair engraved with their name, years of service, and the AISD seal.

In other business, F. Scott Flow, John Betancourt and Jim Austin were sworn in as members of the AISD School Board. New trustees Flow and Betancourt were elected on May 9 to fill the two positions vacated by Carlisle and Thompson, and Austin was re-elected to his fourth term on the Board.

Trustees set June 22 as the date to hold a public hearing on the 2015-16 school district budget, and they proposed a tax rate of $1.19, which is the same rate as this past year. The budget and tax rate are scheduled to be adopted on June 22.

Finally, the Board approved contracts for several facility improvement projects including a sewer line replacement at Wills Elementary, paving improvements at Caprock High School and San Jacinto Elementary, and landscape improvements at Bonham Middle School.
