Seen and Heard at the September Board Meeting

September 19, 2016 -- Superintendent Dr. Dana West discussed the process of campus and district strategic planning with the Board and acknowledged the work of principals and instructional team members present at the meeting.  The district improvement plan and the campus improvement plans, which are annually revised and updated, have the same overarching goals, with different objectives and strategies designed to boost student achievement and meet the learning needs of students. The Board approved the 2016 Campus Improvement Plans for each school, as well as the 2016 Plan for District Improvement.

Trustees approved a contract with Lavin Associates architects for the new elementary school planned for southeast Amarillo.  The Board also approved an agreement with the City of Amarillo that expands the duties and role of the 11 police liaison officers that work in AISD schools.

The Board thanked community donors for the following gifts to schools and the district:  funds for student t-shirts, school supplies, backpacks and playground installation for San Jacinto Elementary School from the Gilliland Family Foundation, Amarillo VA Healthcare System, the 806 Coffee Shop, and the Route 66 Association; a coronet horn from Danna Moore and a string bass from Kristi Longanecker for the AISD Fine Arts Dept.; and funds for the fall tailgate event at Oak Dale Elementary from Carter Plumbing, Rain Premier Sushi Restaurant, United Amigo grocery store, and Sam's Warehouse.  Other gifts were funds to purchase cafeteria tables and materials for the Makerspace room from the Sleepy Hollow Elementary PTA and fees for the Harrington Library Consortium from the Olsen Park Elementary PTA.
