August 9, 2016 – For educators in Amarillo ISD, the upcoming school year brings with it groundbreaking opportunities for innovation and a commitment to cultivate scholars who are thinkers, communicators, collaborators and contributors. That message welcomed more than 3,000 of the District’s educators today as they joined together at Trinity Fellowship Church for all-staff convocation.

Superintendent Dr. Dana West, along with the District’s team of Executive Directors of Student Learning, school board members and a group of standout high school students known as Superintendent’s Ambassadors, led the celebration-charged program. Amarillo ISD alumni and Olympians Brandon Slay and Shaylee Dunavin also made appearances in video messages recorded from the XXXI Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Educators were introduced to AISD’s Profile of a Graduate, a series of videos featuring AISD graduates and community members, giving them a glimpse of what it means to become a thinker, a communicator, a collaborator and a contributor. Those four competencies make up the framework of Profile of a Graduate and will drive district-wide goals and approaches going forward.

“Life is too short to drink from ugly coffee mugs,” Dr. West told the group, using a collection of mugs she has been given over the years to weave together a vision of innovation as a pathway to the Profile of a Graduate approach. “Tests are important, but that’s not what we aspire to do or be… test givers.

“I want to inspire you. I want to encourage you. I want to empower you,” Dr. West continued. “It’s not about me, alone, making a difference. It’s about us. You matter as a solution to the world’s problems.”

The presentation kicked off the beginning of instructional development time for educators and administrators.  Teacher preparation continues over the next few weeks, wrapping up on August 19, with campuses greeting scholars for the first day of the 2016-2017 school year on Monday, August 22.
