DETECTION &
SCREENING

Frequently, parents are the first to notice a problem with their child's hearing. If you believe that your child is not responding appropriately to audio stimulus, you may want to request a hearing test and other evaluations. Select the following survey if you have questions concerning newborn and infant hearing loss.

IS MY BABY'S HEARING NORMAL?

There are a number of ways to detect and measure hearing loss. Here are the three main evaluation categories:

AUDIOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS
AUDITORY BRAINSTEM RESPONSE EVALUATION
MEDICAL EVALUATIONS

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO SCREEN CHILDREN FOR HEARING LOSS?

Hearing loss affects speech and language development, which inevitably impacts academic performance and communication skills. A reputable speech/ language pathologist or an audiologist can detect the cause of a hearing impairment and accurately measure the degree of hearing loss. Developmental skills, academic achievement and a child's ability to learn can be evaluated by a psychologist or a developmental specialist. Once this patient profile is compiled, an educational or family service plan can be developed. This, in turn, can result in assistance from neurologists, physical and occupational therapists, and/or social workers.

If you have questions or concerns, or would like additional information about any of the evaluations described here, ask your audiologist or physician.
