MEDICAL EVALUATIONS
When conducting a medical evaluation, it is important to look for physical
complications which may have precipitated or aggrevated hearing loss. Three
comprehensive evaluations are described below.
OTOLARYNGOLOGY EXAMINATION
In this evaluation an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor) both
examines the hearing system and obtains a complete medical history. If a
hearing loss is present, the otolaryngologist will determine whether or
not medical or surgical treatment would be beneficial. If a hearing aid
is needed, the physician will provide medical approval for its prescription.
MEDICAL GENETICS EVALUATION
Where feasible, the purpose of a medical genetics evaluation is to determine
the cause of a hearing loss. This evaluation involves a full family medical
history, a physical examination of the patient, a review of birth and delivery
records, and when possible, hearing tests for other family members. Based
on findings of this evaluation, other tests may be recommended.
OPHTHALMOLOGY EXAMINATION
Difficulties with hearing can be compounded by poor vision. Children with
a hearing loss often rely more on visual cues than children with normal
hearing. Therefore, vision tests should be performed by an ophthalmologist
(eye doctor) in order to detect and correct problems.
