Panhandle Council for the Deaf (PCD) program provides a range of interpreting
services which assist clients in gaining personal independence and in bridging
the "communication gap" between the hearing and hearing impaired.
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title's II and III, public and
private agencies are required to provide "auxiliary aids and services."
PCD offers the following:
SOHIT - Services to Older Hearing Impaired Texans is for persons over the
age of 60 who need assistance in personal, economic and medical matters,
socialization and transportation. This program identifies needs and provides
case management, advocacy and education/training.
SHHH - Self Help for the Hard of Hearing is a support group affiliated with
the National SHHH, Inc. It consists of individuals who are hard of hearing,
their relatives and friends. The goals of this organization are twofold:
1) To promote better a better understanding of the nature, causes, complications
and possible remedies of hearing loss, and 2) To build better communication
between those who do and do not hear well.
In an effort to increase awareness and expand services, PCD works closely
with the REDP (Regional Education Program for the Deaf), to offer sign classes
to the general public, and with Amarillo College to provide closed caption
services.
The often complex nature of negotiating aids and services such as medical,
legal, vocation training, business requiring contracts and loans requires
special expertise and discretion. Therefore, our PCD interpreters must be
certified through the Board of Evaluators of the Texas Commission For the
Deaf & Hearing Impaired and are bound by a strict code of ethics.
