"WILL MY DEAF CHILD EVER BE ABLE TO TALK?"
Many deaf children have intelligible speech and use speech and lip-reading
as their modality for communication. Several factors are high determiners
for successful speech:
- AMOUNT OF RESIDUAL HEARING
The more hearing the child has with amplification, the greater the ability
to produce speech.
- ONSET OF HEARING LOSS
If the child looses hearing after language has started to develop (after
2 years of age) receptive language aids in acquisition of speech.
- AMOUNT OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
Parents are the child's first and best teacher. When parents are dedicated
to helping the child develop speech and language, success increases.
- NONVERBAL INTELLEGENCE
Average or above average nonverbal intelligence increases the ability to
gain speech.
