March 21, 2019—The Texas Department of Agriculture recently recognized Amarillo ISD’s child nutrition team for its commitment to teaching children about healthy lifestyles. The recognition comes as part of the TDA’s first ever Farm Fresh Challenge.

AISD received the Sharp Cheddar achievement for meeting the second highest set of standards in The Farm Fresh Challenge, showing a commitment to the future of Texas agriculture.

The Farm Fresh Challenge serves as a way nutrition professionals can gain recognition for bringing local foods and garden-based learning activities to their sites. Participating organizations are tasked with completing several parameters. These parameters include committing to serve locally grown food products, hosting two or more nutrition education activities during the month of March, and sharing about Farm Fresh activities on social media.

In a letter addressing the achievement, TDA Commissioner Sid Miller praised the efforts of the child nutrition team at AISD and commended the District for helping build a healthier future for Texas.

“Choosing to buy local foods supports the entire Texas economy by growing jobs and keeping businesses in this great state thriving,” Miller said.

In addition, AISD was also invited to the Business of Numbers and Nutrition Conference in Austin next June, where TDA will recognize the District’s child nutrition team for this achievement.
