Character*Scholarship*Leadership*Service

The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 to recognize and encourage academic achievement while developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy, namely character, leadership, and service. Membership is both an honor and a commitment. As a result, membership in the National Honor Society at Amarillo High School is esteemed as the highest honor the faculty can bestow on an individual student.

Currently, eligibility for membership requires a cumulative average of 92, documentation of leadership and service, and teacher recommendation.

Induction each year takes place in March. Both juniors and seniors selected by the Faculty Council attend a candle-lighting ceremony at an annual banquet. Among the service projects organized and completed by chapter members are: Homeless Feeding through the Salvation Army, Parking Permit Sales and Distribution, Adopt-a-Family Christmas Project, International Student Activities, Eveline Rivers Christmas Workshop, clothing drives for Tyler St. Resource Center, clean up at Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Academic Honors and Scholarship Ceremony, the Courtyard Beautification Project, and numerous activities with the Discovery Center, Art Museum, and other organizations around Amarillo.
