This page is designed to let you know what to expect during your visit with to the AHS Training Room. Each sport is a different situation for us since several of our sports play off campus and there are several venues here on campus. Click on the links below for information specific to that sport.
Weather: If you don't like the weather in the Texas panhandle, just wait a minute and it will change. If you would like to check the forcast or travel conditions, here is a link to one of our local weather sites. http://www.kvii.com/weather.htm
Directions: Amarillo High School is located at 4225 Danbury. Click here for an Amarillo map.
The majority of volleyball and basketball games are played in the Activty Center which is the southern most building on campus. Many of our events are off-campus and maps to those locations are found with the sports below.

Varsity football games are played at Dick Bivins Stadium. Dick Bivins Stadium was built in 1950 and has 4 dressing rooms, an Athletic Training Room in home dressing room, and an Official's dressing room. Click here for a map to Dick Bivins Stadium.
Fieldturf was installed in 1998 and the playing surface maked this a desirable location for play-off games. AHS Athletic Training staff and Team Doctors recommend a flat bottomed shoe or an turf shoe with small (1/4 inch) cleats. We do not recommend cleats with an agressive edge cleat and shorter inner cleats as we believe these can lock into the playing surface. The surface plays well in wet or dry conditions and will retain heat on sunny days.
Dressing room facilities are small and not "state of the art". We recommend that you fill your coolers with water before you leave home since the water in Amarillo can taste "different" and water in the dressing rooms at Dick Bivins can have a distenctive coloring because of the old plumbing. A hose is available near the north end of the field if needed. The stadium provides a fountain drink machine in the dressing room and two bags of ice for each game. A free x-ray service is provided at the stadium for your team physcian. If you do not have a team physcian traveling with you, we will have an Orthopedic Doctor on the sideline who would be glad to help you. An amubulance is on site for all Varsity football games. Stadium personell will be glad to assit you in transporting your equipment to the sideline with one of the stadium's Mules. Since Varsity Football teams usually travel with a great deal of equipment, we do not normally supply ice and water or other supplies unless your needs are communicated and pre-arranged. Since Dick Bivins is away from the AHS campus, every game is a road trip for us too.

Sub varstiy games may be played at Amarillo High, Bonham Middle School or Dick Bivins Stadium.
For games on the AHS campus, we try to be available to take your equipment to the sidelines with the Gator when you arrive. If you would like to fill coolers at AHS, water is available at the South West corner of the track.
Games played at Bonahm Middle School (approximately one half mile South East of AHS) are away games for us also and water is not readily availble. The Athletic Trainer on duty will be in radio contact with Student Athletic Trainers at each site and the Atheltic Training Room and often has to cover football games at AHS and Bonham as well as practice and occasionally a freshman volleyball game at the same time.
Volleyball games are played in the AHS Activity Center on the AHS campus. A cart with a water cooler and an ice chest with several ice bags will be provided on the court. We ask that you bring cups or water bottles for your use.
Our Cross Country meets are held at Thompson Park (click the link for a map). AHS will try to work all meets because we can take our Gator and patrol the course for injuries. If AHS is not able to work the meet because of scheduling conflicts, another AISD Athletic Trianing Staff will be there. A water cooler and chest of ice bags will be provided near the finish line. We will be in radio contact with Student Atheltic Trainers near the finish line and with administrators around the course. The administrators are using FRS radios, so if you have one and would like to be in contact with the Athletic Trainiers, see us for the frequency being used.
Most of our basketball games are played in the AHS Activity Center. When Junior Varsity and Varsity games are being played at the same time, the Junior Varsity will play in the Old Main Gym located just to the North of the Activity Center. Water and ice bags will be supplied on the bench. We ask that you supply cups or water bottles for your team. Our Student Athletic Trainers are in radio contact with the Athletic Trainer in case we are in the other gym when needed.
Most Wrestling matches are held in the Old Main Gym, located just to the North of the AHS Activity Center. A cart with water and ice bags will be provided. We ask that you supply cups or water bottles for your team. For tournaments, we will set up an Atheltic Training area with a table and our supplies to work the tournament. Feel free to bring your athletes to this area when you need to tape or treat them, but the area will be kept clear of athletes who are not being treated. Home matches are staffed with at least 2 Student Atheltic Trainers and one Atheltic Trainer. If your athlete is injured in a match, our staff will be glad to help if requested, otherwise we will turn our efforts to cleaning the mat so that competition can continue.

In an effort to reduce the number of hours that AISD Atheltic Trianers must work, several years ago the AISD started the practice of covering varsity soccer games with the contract help of a Licensed Athletic Trainer. Our Student Athletic Trainers will be at the games, but the Athletic Trainer on duty will be at the AHS campus.
Junior Varsity games may be played at Dick Bivins, AHS or another facility and will be covered by an AHS Student Atheltic Trainer and the Athletic Trianer on duty.
The 2003 Baseball season will see the opening of our new ball park! Since softball needed a field and there was no room to build one on campus, AHS now has new fields located on the South side of Southwest Park. Click this link to view a map that will get you close to the new Baseball field. We have not yet had these fields turned over to us, but it is my understanding that there will be a drinking fountain and water faucet in each dugout. We plan to supply a water cooler for the visitors, but ask that you supply cups or water bottles for your team. Ice will be available, whether we have an ice machine on site or we must bring it from the campus. Since this will be off campus, please let us know if you need anything that we need to bring to the field.

AISD track meets are held at Dick Bivins Stadium. AISD meets will be covered by the Athletic Trainers of at least one of the AISD schools. A small Athletic Training Room will be set up in one of the dressing rooms, but supplies and equipment will be limited. If you have special needs, please contact us and we will pass along your request if another school is covering that particular meet. Water will be provided in or near the on site Athletic Training Room.
Most tennis matches are held here on the AHS campus. Seven courts are located to the West of the AHS Activity Center. The Athletic Training Room in the Activiy Center is available during matches.
We have no pool on campus and do not cover swim meets on a regular basis. If your athletes require treatment before or after their competition, they are welcome to come to the Athletic Training Room on the AHS campus but please let us know what is needed.
Due to the fact that Golf is always off campus and there is a low risk for injury, we do not cover these matches. If your athletes require treatment before or after their competition, they are welcome to come to the Athletic Training Room on the AHS campus but please let us know what is needed.
