Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery was developed and initiated by New Zealand educator, Dr. Marie M. Clay.  This program is a short-term intervention for children at risk of failing to learn to read in the first grade.  Children meet daily in a one-to-one session with a specially trained teacher for an average of 12-20 weeks.  The goal of the program is for children to develop effective reading and writing strategies in order to work within an average group setting, on grade-level, in the regular classroom.

Reading Recovery is an intervention, not a remediation, which serves first grade students with daily 30 minute lessons for accelerated learning.  Lessons focus on meaning, not isolated skills, and start where the child is.  There is strong teacher training and a strong research base to show effectiveness.
