North
Heights Alternative School has an environment designed to target those
students who have been unsuccessful on the traditional high school
campus. Extensive district analysis has been done to identify problem
areas and provide programs to assist students in graduating from the
district schools. The staff at North Heights is committed to
recovering and preparing at-risk
students to become self-directed
learners. The intent is for students to develop an understanding of
the rules of society, meet and accept challenges, and find life
fulfillment. North Heights is located in a traditionally black neighborhood in Amarillo, TX. The total number of students served in the four programs at North Heights averages from 1000-1200 students yearly. The population is comprised of students from the four traditional high schools and their feeder middle schools. Approximately 19% of the North Heights students are Amarillo High cluster students, 12% are Caprock High cluster students, 9% are Palo Duro high cluster students, and 59% are Tascosa High cluster students. The remaining 1% is for contracting district students. Student success is measured by course completion, school attendance, acceptance of personal responsibility as demonstrated through individualized, self-paced instruction, and successful performance on the exit level of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). Students are given an extensive orientation upon entry in order for the students to get a clearer understanding of the purpose and goals of North Heights. |
