Introduction

People from all walks of life are faced with the question " Can I afford it?" To answer this question, most of us rely on our budgeting skills. This web quest will help you design a budget and find a suitable career that will fulfill your realistic financial needs.

Task:Create a PowerPoint Presentation

Use the information in the "Can I afford it" database to construct a pie chart of your budget based on a fixed income of $2500. Refer to previous web quests on Buying/Leasing to adjust your budget, then search the web for a career that will help you attain this financial goal.

Process

This project is to be completed individually during classroom time. The following are steps you need to follow in order to finish this project.

    1. Fill in the budget worksheet in the database. Budget Worksheet Copy and paste the budget worksheet onto word and fill it in. Then copy and paste it onto a slide (see Teacher for practice worksheet)
    2. Calculate the percent and the dollar amount for each category.
    3. Group the expenses into five major categories (Housing, Taxes, Savings, Miscellaneous Expenses, and Living Expenses).
    4. Use Microsoft Excel to generate a pie chart.
    5. While in Excel, work on your background of the pie chart before copying it into PowerPoint.
    6. Use the information, found in your previous web quests Buying/Leasing a home and a vehicle, to adjust your budget accordingly.
    7. Use the salary database to find a career that offers the wages that will satisfy your new budget. www.salary.com
    8. Give a description of your career choice and the required qualifications.(www.salary.com)
    9. Find the education needed for that career and the cost of education.  www.collegenet.com & www.salary.com
    10. Write an essay that will include a brief plan on how you are going to acquire these qualifications, and the possible changes you need to make on your budget to stay afloat. Go to the Inspiration program and find a template you want to use and fill it out. Create an outline and write your essay using the diagram and outline. Be sure you copy and paste the diagram and outline to slides.
