Educator Internship Overview
Internship Objectives
- Helps answer students’ questions of “Why do I need to study
this?”
- Provides teachers, counselors, and administrators the opportunity to explore current issues to create and implement curriculum to use in the classroom.
- Allows the teacher to increase knowledge and skills within their subject area as it relates to a variety of career and workplace environments.
- Identifies practical applications of educator subject area within
the work place by interacting with professionals and experts in business and industry.
- Establishes links with business and industry for sharing of resources for the improvement of educational programs in the educator-intern’s school.
- Helps educators to develop classroom activities for his/her
subject based on practical applications in the workplace.
Types of Internships
Internship I
· First or second time participation
· Visit four businesses as a team made up of four or five educators
· Interview employees with each business: front line, middle level and upper level management to gain a better understanding about needed skills and responsibilities.
· Tour businesses and any areas to assist educator’s knowledge and understanding of the workplace.
· Develop integrated curriculum based on information gained
at interviews.Internship II
· Must have previous intern experience.
· Single intern with one business for 20-40 hours
· Offers more intense, personalized learning experience.
· Interview employees with each business: front line, middle level and upper level management to gain a better understanding about needed skills and responsibilities.
· Tour business and any areas to assist educator’s knowledge and understanding of the workplace.
· Develop integrated curriculum based on information gained
at interviews.
The Business Role
· Allow team or individual educator interns into your business.
· Allow educator or educator teams to observe, interact and interview employees at a minimum of three levels:
1. A member of senior/executive staff
2. A frontline supervisor/mid-management staff
member3. A line worker/technical worker/clerical staff member
· Employers will gain increased awareness of opportunities
to participate in and support educators and counselors in the school.· Affording classroom educators and school counselors the opportunities to visit your worksites and observe first hand
the application of skills and knowledge, will enable them to provide new insight to their students and develop curriculum.
