November 24, 2025 - All across AISD, service learning projects and opportunities for students and employees to give back to our community this holiday season are going strong. One of the longest-running giving traditions is Amarillo High’s canned food drive for the Amarillo Children’s Home. Teacher Vara Shinn started the “Thousand Can Movement” during the Depression to help the struggling children’s home. Her first goal was to collect 1,000 cans of food. 93 years later, the tradition continues. This year’s drive collected 12,539 food items and $14,000 in donations for the ACH.
