Amarillo ISD Announces New Option for School Choice and Flexibility in Education

March 30, 2026 – Amarillo ISD Online, a new, flexible way for students to experience education from the Panhandle’s largest school district with the most opportunities and resources, is ready to begin accepting students for the 2026-2027 school year.
“What we are learning is that our families want flexibility. That flexibility isn’t always supported in a traditional school model,” Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Jennifer Wilkerson said.
To answer that call, Amarillo ISD Online will launch for students in grades 6 -12 for the upcoming school year and is expected to expand to include all grade levels beginning with the 2027-2028 school year. Amarillo ISD Online will offer both fully virtual and hybrid learning instruction in the same courses already offered in AISD’s traditional education model, including core academic and AP courses, physical education, and foreign language. Hybrid students can take advantage of extracurricular activities such as AmTech Career Academy, athletics, band, choir, and orchestra.
Amarillo ISD online is structured with individual student needs in mind, with careful attention paid to addressing concerns about isolation or the typical one-size-fits-all “module-based” online learning. Amarillo ISD Online classes will be led by dedicated teachers, and success coaches will help ensure student needs are met, socially, emotionally and academically.
“We’ve been in the virtual world with Texas Virtual School Network for more than a decade; we’re just expanding by offering more opportunities than we’ve ever had before,” Director of Counseling/College, Career & Military Readiness Tracey Morman said.
Amarillo parent Susan Kendall says her family needs more flexibility for their son, Sam. This school year, the Kendalls opted to enroll Sam in an online learning platform when the traditional school day wasn’t meeting his needs. Sam was able to continue playing tennis, making him an ideal candidate for Amarillo ISD Online’s hybrid option.
“We will 100 percent consider coming back,” says Susan. “We never had anything but amazing support from all the school staff. It was purely a decision for our child’s health, so the convenience of doing it through the school system he has always been in feels like it could be very cohesive.”
