Enrollment Requirements For Elementary Schools

Enrolling in Amarillo ISD Schools

Welcome to Amarillo ISD!

Parents moving into Amarillo should register their children for school as soon as possible. For back-to-school registration, much of the registration process can now be completed online through the Skyward Family Access account. There are still a few things (such as proof of residency, free/reduced lunch applications, and picking up class schedules) that must be taken care of during traditional, on-site registration, usually at the end of July/beginning of August.

During the school year, students may be registered at any time during the school day. Students are assigned to a particular AISD campus according to their home address, and must register at their assigned school. To find out which school your child will attend, please call the AISD Student Records Office at (806) 326-1350. To enroll your child, you will need to bring the following documents:

Required Documents

The following documents are required for all students who are enrolling in AISD for the first time.

(BRING ALL OF THE FOLLOWING)

  • Birth certificate and social security card (if available).
  • Withdrawal form from previous school (if appropriate) or last report card.
  • Name and address of most recent school attended if the school was in another district (AISD will request records from the previous school.)
  • Immunization records.
  • Proof of residence.  (BRING ONE OF THE FOLLOWING)
    • A current utility bill (gas, electric, water, or cable/satellite, not phone or cell phone).
    • A recent (within the last 60 days) rent receipt, or a current lease or rental agreement.
    • The most recent mortgage statement, copy of a tax return, or tax receipt showing home ownership, or a contract to purchase or build a house.

Age Requirements

In Texas, children must be six years old on or before September 1 to enter first grade. Children must be five years old on or before September 1 to enter kindergarten. Children must be four years old on or before September 1 to enter pre-kindergarten.*

*Eligible three-year-olds may be dually enrolled in community based pre-kindergarten classrooms and child care (see “Pre-kindergarten”). 

Pre-Kindergarten

Amarillo ISD provides campus based pre-kindergarten for eligible children who are four years old on or before September 1 of the current school year. The program is aligned with K-12 and is offered at most elementary campuses. AISD also offers a community based pre-kindergarten program for eligible three- and four-year-olds at several local day care facilities.  

To be eligible for pre-kindergarten, a child must meet age requirements and must be:

  1. Unable to speak and comprehend the English language; or
  2. Educationally disadvantaged (eligible to participate in the National Free or Reduced-price Lunch Program); or
  3. Homeless as defined by 42 USC11302; or
  4. The child of an active duty member of the armed forces of the United States, including the state military forces or a reserve component of the armed forces, who is ordered to active duty by proper authority; or
  5. The child of a member of the armed forces of the United States, including the state military forces or a reserve component of the armed forces, who was injured or killed while serving on active duty; or
  6. In, or have been in, the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective services following an adversary hearing under Family Code 262.201.

Flexible Enrollment/Transfers

AISD students may apply for a transfer from one school to another within the District.  Students who live outside the District may also apply for a transfer to a school within AISD  Transfer requests are accepted on a space available basis and must be applied for annually. The District may charge tuition for out-of-district transfers.

Transfer applications are available at all AISD campuses and should be submitted to the receiving school by May 1 for the next school year.
