Seen and Heard at the March 2022 School Board Meeting

March 21, 2022 – At the March 21 School Board meeting, Dr. Tanya Larkin, Executive Director of Region 16 Education Service Center, presented a $39,467 rebate ‘check’ for the District’s participation in Region 16’s purchasing cooperative. Since 2010, AISD has received almost $91,000 in rebates from this purchasing co-op.

During the Superintendent’s Report, principals and representative teachers from Hamlet, Mesa Verde, and Eastridge elementary schools spoke about their schools’ participation in a new reading, language arts, and math curriculum pilot in conjunction with the Texas Education Agency.  Despite the rigorous lesson plans, teachers and principals agreed the curriculum provides quality instructional materials that promote higher thinking skills, student engagement and confidence, and consistency among grade levels.  “The level of lesson planning and engaging content in this curriculum is making a big difference,” said Genie Baca, principal at Eastridge Elementary.  “We’re excited about the academic growth we’re already seeing.”

After reporting on their scheduled visits to campuses for the month, Trustees approved a contract with Tri-State General Contracting Group, Inc., for the Austin Middle School shoring project that will provide temporary shoring for the first floor foundation of the 70+-year-old campus.

In other business, the Board approved resolutions and agreements for Potter and Randall counties to conduct a joint election on May 7 for Amarillo ISD and the City of Amarillo.  On the ballot will be School Bond 2022, which will consist of four separate propositions focusing on restoration and replacement of aging school infrastructure, safety and security enhancements, and fine arts and athletics facility additions and improvements.  For more about the bond election, visit https://www.aisdbond.com/

Finally, the Board expressed appreciation for $15,029.15 worth of gifts and donations given to the schools this month from Tony Ivey, Dr. Rouzbeh Kordestani, an anonymous donor, Coldwell Banker Realtors and the Amarillo Association of Realtors.
