Seen and Heard at the School Board Meeting - September 15, 2014

September 15, 2014 –  Representatives from TG, the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation, spoke to the Board. TG is a private, non-profit organization which manages a portfolio of student loans and provides training and resources regarding college access and FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) completion. TG has formed a Regional Collaboration for Student Success and wants to work with AISD to help students and families find ways to access and pay for college.

Superintendent Schroder reported to the Board about the State Board of Education’s intent to develop a long-range plan, and he discussed a recent meeting with superintendents and the Texas Education Commissioner. Commissioner Williams said he is proposing “Literacy Academies” across the state to help students in grades 1 – 3 with reading and writing. He also said some 46,000 Texas high school students have yet to pass one or more state mandated end-of-course exams to be able to graduate in 2015.

Trustees approved the 2014-2015 District Improvement Plan, and they approved Campus Improvement Plans for each of the district’s 53 schools. The Board also approved a list of community activities for which students can receive PE credit, and they sanctioned 4-H activities in four different counties as approved extra-curricular providers for AISD students.

Finally, the Board took action to authorize a $500,000 change order to an existing contract with Southwest General Contractors in anticipation of an insurance settlement to repair the Mesa Verde Elementary gymnasium which was damaged in a fire on July 10.
