Seen and Heard at the November 2018 School Board Meeting

November 19, 2018 - The November Board meeting started with selections from a combined show choir from Amarillo, Caprock, Palo Duro and Tascosa high schools. Trustees approved a clean audit report for the District’s funds and accounts for 2017-2018, and they approved the purchase of new playgrounds for Rogers, Whittier, Lee, Humphrey’s Highland, Glenwood, Windsor, San Jacinto, Coronado and Emerson elementary schools.

The Board approved design and construction phase documents for two bond packages that include construction work at several schools. Design plans were approved for a package of projects at Caprock High School and Tradewind Elementary School totaling $14,401,138. At Caprock, the old main gym facility will be renovated into 12 classrooms and a choir room and a new auxiliary gym facility will be built. The work also includes auditorium and restroom renovations, plumbing/sewer line replacement, site drainage improvements, a new parking lot, window replacement, and locker room restroom and shower upgrades. Bullet resistant glass will be installed in exterior doors at Tradewind Elementary and the school will also receive site drainage improvements.

Trustees also approved construction documents and authorized the bidding process to begin for a $12,742,273 package of bond projects at Palo Duro High School, Mann and Travis middle schools and Allen 6th Grade Campus. This work includes restroom renovations, bullet resistant glass installation, drop-off improvements, window replacements, and locker room restroom and shower upgrades. In addition, the Palo Duro auditorium will be renovated, and the school’s basement will be converted into classrooms to alleviate overcrowding.

In other business, the Board approved elevator replacement at Dick Bivins Stadium and the District-owned Park West Office Center, they took action to improve District purchasing and bidding procedures, and they renewed a contract for Internet filtering software for technology devices issued to students.

Finally, the Board expressed appreciation for $9,957.53 worth of gifts and donations given to schools this month from Walmart, Castle Furniture, Mr. and Mrs. John Colquitt, Katherine Adams, the Amarillo High School Volleyball Booster Club, the Belmar Elementary 5th Grade Class of 2018, the Tascosa High School Alumni Class of 1988, Sandra Brady, Allen’s Tri-State Mechanical, The Tascosa High School Booster Club, and the Amarillo Downtown Kiwanis Club.
