Seen and Heard at the August School Board Meeting

August 20, 2014 – Jim Lawson, director of maintenance and construction, gave an update on the renovation of the tennis center at Austin Middle School.  The tennis facility, which includes 11 courts, is used by the Tascosa High School tennis team and also for UIL tennis tournaments.  The renovation includes adding parking, rebuilding the coach’s office, adding locker room facilities, and adding more spectator seating.  The project should be complete by September 2015.

The Board adopted a tax rate of $1.189, which is the same rate as last year.  Applied to a home with a value of $100,000, annual school taxes will be $1,189.

Trustees approved a construction proposal to complete the Travis 6th Grade Campus.  Both of the new 6th grade campuses (for Travis and Bowie middle schools) are included in the 2013 bond projects and should be completed by the start of the 2015-2016 school year.

Trustees also approved a change in policy to extend high school credit recovery procedures to middle school.  If a middle or high school student fails the first semester of a core course but passes the second semester, the student can get credit for the entire course if the average of the two semester grades is at least 70 or if the student uses a credit recovery option such as retaking the failed semester.
