AISD COVID-19 Update - March 31

Governor’s new Executive Order extends school closure to May 4; Amarillo Mayor issues stay-at-home directive; AISD announces four new meal pick-up locations

Governor issues new Executive Order: Texas Schools closed at least until Monday, May 4: Texas Governor Greg Abbott today issued a new Executive Order that calls for Texans to continue practicing social distancing, minimize contact with others, and stay at home except for activities related to essential services. The Governor also called for all schools in the State to remain closed at least until Monday, May 4.

City moves to Status Level Red, Amarillo residents urged to stay home: To try to help lessen the impact of the spread of COVID-19 in our community, Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson and the City Commission have announced an ‘All In Amarillo’ campaign and issued a stay-at-home directive for all residents effective from Monday, March 30, at 11:59 p.m., until Monday, April 13, at 11:59 p.m.

This means that all non-essential businesses are to be closed and non-essential activities stopped for the time being. According to the City, trips to the grocery store, doctor’s appointments and to get gas or household supplies are allowed as essential activities. Families leaving home to get schoolwork and meals is also allowed.

AISD school closure extended until Monday, May 4: Following the new guidance from the Governor, all Amarillo ISD schools and buildings will be closed at least until Monday, May 4.

“I want to especially thank our parents as we are starting the transition to at-home learning this week,” said Superintendent Doug Loomis. “This is a new reality for all of us, but we will work through it together. Please understand that our directive from the State is to continue to provide instruction to all of our 31,000 students, even though our school buildings are closed.”

“We need parents’ help to ensure students are taking part in lessons, doing assignments, and staying in contact with their teachers. We are doing everything we can to support this process and I urge you to reach out to teachers, administrators and school staff for help. We are all in this together,” said Mr. Loomis.

AISD adds four sites to meal pick-up locations for lunch service: Amarillo ISD has added four meal pick-up location sites, bringing the total number of curbside pick-up locations for lunch to 16. The newest sites are Avondale, Emerson, Humphrey’s Highland and Wills elementary schools. For all the details about AISD’s free meal curbside pick-up program, visit https://www.amaisd.org/268869_2

Last week, the District handed out a total of 2,494 breakfasts and 15,463 lunches. New Texas Dept. of Agriculture rules allow parents to pick up meals for their children even if their children are not present in the car. Parents simply need to show something from the school that indicates their child attends an AISD school (such as a school letter, email, bumper sticker, etc.)
